Of the four sub-industries that make up the Support Services grouping, we were able to source data for three of these sub-industries.

The Agriculture and Fishing Support Services industry is influenced by a diverse range of markets including dairy, livestock (sheep and beef cattle), horticulture, fishing, aquaculture, and other crop production. The industry is expected to continue growing, but with emerging technologies there is expected to be changes in demand for specific services, such as reduced demand for manual fruit harvesting.

The Landscaping Construction services industry experienced substantial growth during the pandemic, driven by strong demand in the residential building and infrastructure sectors, as well as increased household spending on landscaping due to rising house and land values. However, recent increases in interest rates and the ‘cost of living crisis’ have reduced household market demand.
The Other Agricultural Product Wholesaling industry is closely tied to New Zealand’s domestic agriculture sector. While the industry is not directly engaged in international trade, it is indirectly affected by global agriculture supply, demand, and price trends. The industry has experienced a mix of conditions recently, but industry revenue is forecast to rise.

Total Revenue and GDP Trend

In 2023, the combined revenue from Landscape Services ($1.9 billion); Shearing, Cropping and Agricultural Support Services ($5.2 billion), and Livestock and Other Agricultural Supplies Wholesaling ($8.0 billion) was over $15 billion. When combined, these industries contributed an estimated $3.5 billion to GDP in 2023 with Shearing, Cropping and Agricultural Support Services estimated to contribute $2.1 billion, Landscape Services estimated to contribute $777 million and Livestock and Other Agricultural Supplies Wholesaling estimated to contribute $594 million.

Note that in the source for GDP estimates, Agricultural Support Services has been combined with Shearing and Cropping. It is not possible for us to separate out the Agricultural Support Services part of this estimate, though it is likely to make most of the contribution to the estimates.

The estimated contribution to GDP of the Landscaping Services industry increased more than three-fold between 2013 and 2021, and having fallen over the last two years is expected to be stable over the next five years. The long-term trend for the Livestock and Other Agricultural Supplies Wholesaling industry and for the Shearing, Cropping and Agricultural Support Services industry suggests steady growth over the next five years.
