Sheep, Beef, Deer and Wool farming

The industry wants shorter, targeted, and flexible training. Ahead of a major review of the agriculture qualification suite next year, Muka Tangata will explore the role of micro-credentials in reshaping training for the Sheep, Beef, Deer, and Wools industry.

For example, we will explore breaking the Level 5 Diploma of Agribusiness into micro-credentials, to appeal to a wider audience. We will also develop shorter, targeted training, in the form of micro-credentials, to address targeted skills needs. We are engaging with industry to identify priority areas, which could include land use change; skills around agritech (behind the farm gate); planning, organising, and project management; grazing management; irrigation; biosecurity; and regenerative agriculture.

Update:

Through the Entry Level and Agriculture qualification development projects, Muka Tangata will explore the role of micro-credentials in reshaping training for the Sheep, Beef and Deer industries. For example, we will investigate skills across industries and how to make the training more appealing to a wider audience and across sectors. We will also work with industry to develop shorter, targeted training, to address specific skill needs. We are engaging with industry to identify priority areas, which could include land use change; skills around agritech (behind the farm gate); planning, organising, and project management; grazing management; irrigation; biosecurity; and regenerative agriculture.

Next Steps:

Creating the final documentation for industry approval and submission to NZQA.

Latest progress:

We have held a successful in-person meeting in Wellington with the working group to gather further detail for the skill standards that will accompany the micro-credentials.
