Ethnicity
The Arable workforce is one of the least ethnically diverse workforces across Muka Tangata industries and compared to the national average (national benchmark). Most of the workforce identify as European, with a smaller percentage of Māori, very few Asian and less than 1% Pacific peoples. This trend has remained stable.
Age
Arable has an older workforce compared to the age distribution of workers across Muka Tangata industries and the national average (national benchmark). Over one third of Arable workers are aged 55 and over compared to around one quarter across Muka Tangata industries and the national average. Overall, the age distribution of the Arable workforce has remained consistent since 2015, however, within Cereal Grain Growing the workforce has been steadily ageing.
Regional Distribution
The Arable workforce is concentrated in the Canterbury and Waikato regions. In 2021, just over half the workforce lived in these two regions. The Cereal Grain wholesaling and Other Grain Growing workforces are especially concentrated in the Canterbury region. All other regions accounted for less than 10% of the workforce each.
Gender
In 2021, 36% of individuals working in Arable industries identified as female. This is consistent with the percentage of females working across Muka Tangata industries but sits well below the national average (benchmark) of 47%.
