Welcome to our initial Skills Forecasting Dashboard
Skills Forecasting dashboard provides a forward-looking view of how the food and fibre workforce and its skills profile are projected to evolve under different scenarios through to 2050.
About Skills Forecasting
Our tool is designed to support industry and sector leaders in exploring how to align workforce development with future skills needs. Users can assess the potential impact of different training interventions on the workforce's skills profile and evaluate the training necessary to achieve specific industry or workforce goals.
The Skills Forecasting tool uses a microsimulation model to replicate the food and fibre workforce and simulate how it would look under a variety of different scenarios through to 2050. The model has been independently reviewed to check its robustness - NZIER MT review of training model. For more details on how the tool works, please get in touch with the team. We’ll continually update the supporting technical documentation - Skills Forecasting Model Technical Report.
About the scenarios
We have included an initial set of scenarios within this release of the Skills Forecasting Dashboard. These include demand-based scenarios that extend industry forecasts undertaken by MPI and NZIER, examinations of what happens if training continues its current downward trajectories, and looking at what happens if there’s a greater focus on particular types of training.
From our initial testing with industry, we are now working on the next set of scenarios. This includes work on:
- What workforce and skills might be needed to double exports?
- What might the workforce look like for different ethnicities?
- If we were to deliver more training as smaller chunks of learning / micro-credentials - what would that mean for the qualification levels in the workforce?
- Specific industry updates to the original MPI/NZIER forecasts to bring them up to date.
- Expanding our training model to capture ‘provider-based’ training and improving our estimates of workers with ‘relevant’ qualifications.
Collaborating for Future Insights
This is the initial release of the Skills Forecasting tool for industry feedback. We are continuing to update the scenarios and refine the modelling and dashboard. We are also very happy to provide technical briefings, diving deeper into how we built the tool and its data.
