Ethnicity
The Vegetable industry group is ethnically diverse. The Vegetable industries have the highest percentage of workers who identify as Asian across all Muka Tangata industries. The industry representation of people who identify as Asian, Māori, and Pacific peoples are also all higher than all industries (national benchmark). There is a stable trend of ethnic diversity across the industry, with some areas such as Mushroom Growing having two thirds of the workforce who identify as Asian.
Age
The Vegetable industries have a younger workforce composition than other Muka Tangata industries, with the Fruit and Vegetable Retailing and Outdoor Vegetable Growing workforces being younger on average than the Under Cover Vegetable Growing and Mushroom Growing workforces. The industry also has the highest demographic of people between the ages of 15 and 24, well above the average for all industries (national benchmark).
Regional Distribution
While Outdoor Vegetable Growing takes place across the country, some other industries are more concentrated. The Mushroom Growing workforce is highly concentrated in Canterbury, while Auckland is a key region for Under Cover Vegetable growing, and Fruit and Vegetable Retailing.
Gender
There are a higher percentage of people in the Vegetable workforce who identify as female (47%) than most other Muka Tangata industries (36%), aligning with the average across all industries (national benchmark) (47%). This is even higher in Mushroom Growing, where more than two thirds of the workforce identify as female.
