Workforce Demographics
- The Vegetable industry group has by far the greatest proportion of workers identifying as Asian, at nearly one third of the workforce. Pacific peoples are also well represented, in part due to industry reliance on Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers.
- The Vegetable industry has one of the highest proportions of workers aged 15 to 24 across Muka Tangata industries as a result of nearly 30% of workers in Fruit and Vegetable retailing falling into this age group.
- Around 30% of the Vegetable industry workforce live in the Auckland region, followed by Canterbury.
- Women are well represented, making up nearly half the Vegetable industry workforce, and this is even higher for Mushroom Growing (the smallest workforce in the Vegetable industry), at around 60%. This is higher in comparison to the average across all Muka Tangata industries where around one third of the workforce are women.
