Arable has one of our smallest workforces, that has remained relatively stable since 2015 at around 6,500 – 7,000 workers. Around two thirds of these workers are in ‘Other crop growing’.
Compared to other Muka Tangata industries, Arable has a high proportion of self-employed workers and employers, highlighting its strong owner-operator focus. However, this proportion has been declining as more people take on employee roles.
