Veterinary Services and Animal Care Workforce Demographics

  • Veterinary Services is the least ethnically diverse industry group across Muka Tangata, however, there has been a very small increase in workers identifying as Māori and Asian since 2015.
  • A third of the workers in Veterinary Services are aged 25 to 34, which is one of the highest among Muka Tangata industries.
  • Women make up over 80% of the Veterinary Services workforce, which is significantly higher than the average across Muka Tangata industries at around one-third.  Some occupations, such as Veterinary Nurse, are almost entirely women.
  • Veterinary Services is the most qualified workforce across Muka Tangata industries with around 80% of workers holding either a Post-School NZ Certificate or Diploma or Bachelor’s degree or higher (i.e. at least a NZQCF Level 4 qualification).
