Front roe at the salmon hatchery
Our kaimahi recently visited a salmon hatchery (smolt) in Canterbury where they got to see the different areas of the hatchery, including where the eggs are stored, breeding stock and the baby salmon in the race way.
Stephen has been working with the aquaculture and seafood industries through our Seafood qualifications development project to develop new qualifications, including exploring a biosecurity micro-credential specific to the seafood industry.
Izy has been working with the salmon and oyster industries to understand and map the skills needed and the career pathways to work from the hatchery, right through to the farm and processor.
While every salmon smolt is unique, it was great to see first-hand what happens at the hatchery and hear about the skills needed for the various roles. Thanks Lukas and Molly for the tour!
