Environmental sustainability and conservation are an ongoing focus across the industry.

Nursery, Turf and Gardening is an industry with a wide range of challenges across environmental sustainability and conversation.

The Sports Turf industry has to navigate a multitude of different legislation and compliance around greenkeeping and inputs such as water, agrichemicals and fertiliser. The industry practice of using hybrid/synthetic surfaces may also be impacted as more restrictions around micro-plastics come into play (e.g., the impending European Union decision around banning crumb rubber infill).

Practices around the sustainability of water use and the minimisation of plastics are also a concern for the Nursery industry, which is currently experiencing increased demand due to local and central government conservation initiatives. The native nursery sub-industry will need to double the current production of native seedlings to meet government and community planting targets over the next decade. The industry is looking to better meet the demand for native seedlings through greater engagement between government, councils and nurseries to understand future requirements, and considering how factors such as eco-sourcing and specialisation may impact delivery.
