Non-formal learning is currently being used to support employees to move into leadership roles.

The industry has identified leadership training as a key issue to support employees who are responsible for leading seasonal worker teams (especially in the Kiwifruit industry). There is a tension between the concept of leadership and supervision, and the training that is needed to support both of these roles; Development of the FFCoVE Leadership Development Framework project is currently underway and aims to design and adopt a food and fibre leadership framework. Some of the existing leadership programmes are too long for the industry needs and extend beyond the seasonal bursts of work where leadership skills are more vital.
