Better support for learners can help them succeed in their training and qualifications.

Pastoral care is a complex but important issue that cuts across all Muka Tangata industries. In some instances, there are industries with high levels of cultural diversity in their workforce, such as Fruit and Vegetables, and supporting learners in these multi-cultural environments is a priority for these industries. 16% of the workforce in Muka Tangata industries identified as Māori in 2020, and in some industries and sub-industries this is significantly higher, such as Forestry (31%), Seafood (25%) and Sheep Shearing (65%). We know that better support for learners can help them succeed in their training and qualifications. This includes cultural awareness and better consideration and inclusion of Te Ao Māori in delivery and assessment models. While there are some good examples of employer pastoral care, especially in Forestry, there isn’t a clear model of “what good looks like”.
