Non-formal learning is currently being used to support employees to move into leadership roles.

The pathway into leadership roles is unclear, with not enough skilled leadership staff in the industry. There is a gap in qualifications that support employees to move into leadership roles, with the industry creating non-formal training in leadership to fill this gap. There is a need for leadership training to support people to progress into supervisory roles and project management level positions.

There is a tension between the concept of leadership and supervision, and the training that is needed to support both of these roles. The Food and Fibre Centre of Vocational Excellence Leadership Development Framework project is currently underway and aims to design and adopt a food and fibre leadership framework. Some of the existing leadership programmes are too long and extend beyond the seasonal bursts of work where leadership skills are more vital.
