Understanding Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and occupation trend forecasts at an industry level means that we can target investment in vocational education and training to meet the needs of our food and fibre industries.
The new tool enables users to filter and visualise three-year forecasts of occupations by industry and year, as well as view historic and forecasted GDP by industry.
This project is being led by the Shared Data Platform to provide data and insights for all the sectors covered by the Workforce Development Councils.
Phase 1 of this project was completed at the end of 2024 and delivered official GDP estimates by region and industry groups to estimate GDP for detailed industries (ANZSIC class). This information is currently publicly available for industry to use, along with dashboards to assist navigation and analysis. Phase 2 incorporates new Census 2023 data from StatsNZ as well as several other improvements targeting confidence in the data presented and expanding analysis to include job counts.

- January - February 2025: Confidence ranges added, hind- and forecasts of job counts, and breakdowns by age and gender.
- March - April 2025: Tool updates implemented and release to public.
Latest update
Phase 2 began in mid-December 2024 with the Census 2023 data from StatsNZ being top priority. This update will improve confidence in the data presented and shift the trajectory of the initial tool’s forecasts as there are now actuals to reference up to 2023.
