The number of ākonga identifying as Māori enrolled in qualifications under the purview of Muka Tangata increased from 2017 to 2021, peaking at 6,975 ākonga in 2021. However, there was an approximately 10% decline in ākonga Māori enrolments in 2022, mirroring the overall decline in total ākonga numbers.

The percentage of ākonga Māori has remained steady at around 23% of all ākonga enrolled in Muka Tangata qualifications over the past few years.
